Summary

A mesmerising mystery story about friendship from the internationally bestselling author of Norwegian Wood and 1Q84

Tsukuru Tazaki had four best friends at school。 By chance all of their names contained a colour。 The two boys were called Akamatsu, meaning ‘red pine’, and Oumi, ‘blue sea’, while the girls’ names were Shirane, ‘white root’, and Kurono, ‘black field’。 Tazaki was the only last name with no colour in it。

One day Tsukuru Tazaki’s friends announced that they didn't want to see him, or talk to him, ever again。

Since that day Tsukuru has been floating through life, unable to form intimate connections with anyone。 But then he meets Sara, who tells him that the time has come to find out what happened all those years ago。

I thoroughly enjoyed Murakami's writing style。 I don't normally mind an "open" ending, but found this one to be disappointing。 I thoroughly enjoyed Murakami's writing style。 I don't normally mind an "open" ending, but found this one to be disappointing。 。。。more

Tsukuru is part of a group of four close friends when he is suddenly cast out and left without a single clue。 The book follows his life as he goes back to his hometown to figure out what happened years later。 To his surprise, one of his old friends has been strangled to death and has a secret that will change the course of his life forever。

I really liked how Murakami once more developed an entire fresh and melancholic vibe around a simplistic yet complex introspective perspective。 The main character, Tsukuru was kicked out of his highschool friends group。 This was a major breakdown for him at the time and his entire life he tried to cope with this unsolved situation。 Time passed and the problem was still there, in his mind, body and soul。。。 almost stopping him from truly living。 However, after some time he has started to seek the I really liked how Murakami once more developed an entire fresh and melancholic vibe around a simplistic yet complex introspective perspective。 The main character, Tsukuru was kicked out of his highschool friends group。 This was a major breakdown for him at the time and his entire life he tried to cope with this unsolved situation。 Time passed and the problem was still there, in his mind, body and soul。。。 almost stopping him from truly living。 However, after some time he has started to seek the answers。。。 I will not go into details regarding the plot, but what I can say is that the book was captivating, almost could not stop reading it all at once。 Really recommend it for light yet deep reading。 。。。more

Another great novel by Murakami。 One good aspect of these novels is that they warrant rereading。 Goodreads says I highlighted 9 passages on Kindle -- I'll go back and see what I liked! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I still can't accept the ending but since I've read theories and reviews, it gives off a purpose on why that happen。One theory I read is that Haida could be another version of Tsukuru who raped and killed Yuzu。 I remember the story that Haida shared to Tsukuru about his father and Midorikawa。 Remember when Midorikawa placed a bag on top of the piano while playing。 I have a feeling that those were the ashes of Yuzu because Eri said that Yuzu was cremated, turned to ash and could never see her aga I still can't accept the ending but since I've read theories and reviews, it gives off a purpose on why that happen。One theory I read is that Haida could be another version of Tsukuru who raped and killed Yuzu。 I remember the story that Haida shared to Tsukuru about his father and Midorikawa。 Remember when Midorikawa placed a bag on top of the piano while playing。 I have a feeling that those were the ashes of Yuzu because Eri said that Yuzu was cremated, turned to ash and could never see her again。 But I think that Midorikawa symbolizes Yuzu at the same time。 Midorikawa and Haida (the father) actually talked about the death token。 This could also be the reason why Yuzu was having a disorder and acting oddly。While reading the book I sort of guessed that Haida left Tsukuru and killed Yuzu。 I was hoping at the end that Tsukuru would still find Haida just like he did with his 4 friends。 The 6 fingers actually kind of represents the friends of Tsukuru and himself。 The sixth finger can represent Haida (since his color is gray, the mixture of black(Kuro) and white(Shiro))。 And the weird train story of a jar with a finger on it, (explained by the stationmaster and Sakamoto) the finger can either be Haida or Shiro, but it would make sense if it were Haida because he's not included in the group。Over all this book has an amazing twist and unsolved mysteries with the facts already stated in different forms。 。。。more

You shouldn’t deprive yourselves of all the joy of meeting new people and learning new things from them just because you were abandoned by somebody。 You need to learn that people are always changing and relationships are rarely stable and hardly ever last。 You need to learn to enjoy the moments you have with them, to love them, to accompany them through hardships and failure, and to be happy with them and for them when they achieve success。 After reading this book, I came to think about MY years You shouldn’t deprive yourselves of all the joy of meeting new people and learning new things from them just because you were abandoned by somebody。 You need to learn that people are always changing and relationships are rarely stable and hardly ever last。 You need to learn to enjoy the moments you have with them, to love them, to accompany them through hardships and failure, and to be happy with them and for them when they achieve success。 After reading this book, I came to think about MY years of pilgrimage。 I now realize how my father’s abodonment( he passed away when I was 2) eventhough not on purpose made me fearful of leaving people and people leaving me。 Now that I look back on my journey, I can see how much I have grown up after my therapy sessions just like Sokuro’s therapy sessions with Sarah whom I think acted as a therapist for him。 After finding peace just like Sokuro at the end of the book, I have learnt to enjoy being with people in the moment。 I try to appreciate the time we have with eachother now and I am no longer afraid of their leaving me or my leaving them。 CARPE DIEM was my take from this book as every book I read these days。 。。。more

。。。more

I liked this one better than Norwegian Wood。 The story was gripping and engaging, even though not a lot happened plot-wise。 I was completely drawn in by the mystery and pain of Tsukuru’s past, and had to know the outcome of his journey。 The ending is ambiguous but felt right。 I love the hints of mysticism and magic in Murakami’s works。 Nothing is ever solid or trustworthy。 There were a lot of relatable emotions and views in here that Murakami expressed perfectly in his writing。 Really good!
